Where do Japanese kids live when they are in University?
In Japan you normally start university at 18 and finish at 22.The Legal age is 20.but I read in Manga and I see mostly the Ronin who failed the entrace exam living in a boarding house .Japanese university do not have dorms like in the U.S. only international universitys.but I never see in Manga kids that are in University living with their parents.
I thought you had to be 20 to get your own apartment
Well, I’ve studied at one of university in Japan. I was 18 and I lived in apartment. At 18 you can legally sign a contract, such as a lease. Until then, no sane landlord will let you live in their place. It was so much better then a dorm.
Initially, I decided to live in a dorm, because I didn’t think I could function in a home without knowing any Japanese. Later in the semester, I realized that dorm life is a disadvantage when studying abroad. At JCMU, there were only a handful of native Japanese students living in the dorm. As a result, I didn’t push myself to speak Japanese outside the classroom. I think this hindered my learning progression.
Because of a bad housing situation on campus, my parents decided that it would be better for me to have my own apartment and become a “commuter” rather then a “resident” student. I had a 1-bedroom apartment in a very nice gated community.
Yes I could legally sign a contract but because I still in school I had no credit history. So my dad name had to be put on the lease as well as mine (as a joint tenant although the management of the complex is aware that my dad didn’t actually live there).
